Im August 1996 organisierten die Zapatistas in Chiapas, im Süden von Mexiko, das "Erste Interkontinentale Treffen für die Menschheit und gegen den Neoliberalismus". 3000 Besucher aus 42 Ländern debattierten hier zusammen mit der indigenen Bevölkerung. Bruno Serralongue war zum Zeitpunkt dieses, aus heutiger Sicht wegweisenden Ereignisses gegen-staatlichen Handelns, der einzige Künstler in Chiapas. In der Position des Außenstehenden nimmt Serralongue anders als ein Pressefotograf mit seiner Großformatkamera scheinbar nebensächliche Motive und banale Ansichten in den Blick. Damit lenken seine Fotografien die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Inszenierung des Ereignisses. Encuentro, Chiapas zeigt die 1996 entstandene Serie erstmals in seiner Vollständigkeit, ergänzt durch fotografische Notizen, die während seines Aufenthaltes in Mexiko entstanden sind.

In August 1996, the Zapatistas in Chiapas, in southern Mexico, organized the First Intercontinental Meeting for Humanity and against Neoliberalism. Three thousand visitors from forty-two countries engaged with the indigenous population here in a collective debate. Bruno Serralongue was the only artist in Chiapas at the time of this anti-statist gathering, which is now viewed as a groundbreaking event. Unlike a press photographer Serralongue with his large-format camera homes in on seemingly secondary motifs and banal aspects, viewing them from the position of an outsider. As a result, his photographs draw attention to the staging of the event. Encuentro, Chiapas shows the 1996 series in its entirety for the first time, supplemented by photographic notes recorded during the artist's stay in Mexico.
