Brahms was a musician's musician, in some respects an "academic" composer, and so it's practically impossible for professional scholars and musicians to approach his music without wanting to demonstrate at some point that they are as smart as Brahms, and uniquely able to unravel the technical intricacies of his larger works. For the general reader, this obviously represents a problem; indeed, it's not exactly a joy for the music professional either. Though Brahms' symphonies are often treated somewhat like medicine, as something "good for you," but otherwise lacking in purely sensual pleasure, David Hurwitz takes the reader beyond the jargon and pedantry and unlocks the mystery (and the joy) contained within Brahms' symphonies.

Über den Autor

David Hurwitz is the Founder and Executive Editor of [...], the Internet's first Classical Music recording review magazine, and the popular YouTube channel The Ultimate Classical Music Guide by Dave Hurwitz. He holds MA degrees from Johns Hopkins and Stanford Universities. Hurwitz is the author of books on Mozart, Mahler, Sibelius, Haydn, Dvorák, Brahms, Beethoven, Shostakovich, R. Strauss Bernstein, Handel, C.P.E. Bach, and Mendelssohn. His musicological articles have been published in noted journals such as Music & Letters, Nineteenth-Century Music Review, and Early Music America.

While there are a couple of monographs on individual symphonies (No. 1, for example, in the Cambridge Handbook series, which is highly technical and very expensive) the only current book to deal with all four in a single volume is Walter Frischâ?Ts Brahms: The Four Symphonies, and the problem with Frisch can best be summed up in this effusive comment by a reader on [...]: â?oI was never able to articulate reason for the magical of the second movement of the Third Symphony, until I read Frisch's comments on how the tonic chord can be the dominant of the subdominant.â??
