O'Hear takes a stand against the fashion for explaining human behavior in terms of evolution. He argues that evolutionary theory, successful as it is in explaining the development of living things, cannot give a satisfactory account of such distinctive facets of human life as self-consciousness, the quest for knowledge, moral, sense, and the appreciation of beauty; in these we transcend our biological origins.

Anthony O'Hear is professor of philosophy at the University of Buckingham, UK. He was director of the Royal Institute of Philosophy and editor of its journal Philosophy for twenty-five years. In 2018 he was appointed OBE for his services to education.
