Beschreibung
Olson's edition of the play, which replaces Platnauer's of 1969, is based on a complete new collation of the manuscripts, many of which have never been adequately reported before. The extensive commentary explores matters of all sorts, but it focuses in particular on the realities of daily life in classical Athens and also examines the practical problems of staging. The substantial introduction includes essays on Aristophanes' early career, the politics of the Greek world in the late 420s, and the poet's theology.

Über den Autor
Aristophanes, active in Athens during the fifth and early fourth centuries BCE, is the greatest surviving playwright of ancient Greek Old Comedy. His plays are central documents of classical theatre, Athenian political culture, and comic satire, combining public argument with fantasy, parody, obscenity, lyric invention, and direct attacks on the personalities and institutions of his day. Works such as Lysistrata, The Clouds, The Birds, The Frogs, and The Wasps preserve a vivid comic record of democratic Athens under pressure from war, intellectual change, and civic rivalry.Although little is known with certainty about Aristophanes' private life, his surviving comedies show a dramatist of extraordinary verbal energy and political confidence. He satirised generals, philosophers, poets, jurors, public policy, and the habits of ordinary citizens, often turning immediate Athenian controversies into theatrical structures that still read as sharp, strange, and alive. His work remains indispensable for readers of Greek comedy, classical drama, political satire, ancient literature, and the history of theatre.
