Andrzej Towianski considered himself a reviver of the Christian faith who strove to lead Christianity to a higher level of perfection. Traditionally, literary research in Poland focused almost exclusively on Towianski's influence on Polish romantic poetry. The present volume shows this controversial personality in a new light and puts him in a European context from a religious-historical perspective. Here, Polish, German, French, Italian and Russian source material are being analysed, which can be found in the appendix partly for the first time. The work focuses on the posthumous and comprehensive Turin edition of Towianski's works, presented as a collective work of his closest students. The author concentrates on connections and movements such as the early socialist Henri Saint-Simon, Jewish mysticism and mesmerism. Moreover, the author shows Towianski's activities by using archived material.
