If you want to learn how hydrocarbons are discovered and produced, Tim¿s explanations have the added colour of vivid descriptions of the sites discussed and allow you to meet some of the most important characters in the industry, and to gain new insights into this global industry. In addition, the depictions of key events and locations add an element of national politics and travelogue feel. This book is intended for all members of the general public interested in how hydrocarbon resources are discovered, providing a concise account of how oil geologists view the subsurface, and illustrated by the author¿s personal experiences in countries around the world. The book will also be of interest to ex-oil industry workers, allow geologists to compare the author¿s experiences to their own, and provide non-geologists essential insights into how the oil is won. Written in an informal style, it makes for a relaxing yet informative reading experience.

The author Tim Daley has worked for more than 30 years in the oil business as a seismic interpreter employed in the quest for hydrocarbons resources around the world. After graduating with geology and geophysics degrees from Oxford and Durham, he has integrated seismic and bore hole information to understand oil plays where it is critical to imagine the story of how the rocks work, out of sight and under our feet, combining to create the conditions to trap hydrocarbons.
Extensive travel has included expatriate assignments in the USA, Indonesia, Pakistan, Venezuela and Tunisia and employment has ranged from multinational corporations down to small independents and across the whole industry cycle, from unexplored frontiers to mature producing fields. The time period has spanned several global oil price shocks which are the back drop to in-country political events.
Presents an interesting and accessible read about petroleum geology
Explains the technical aspects of exploration/production of hydrocarbons
Helps understand and improve on media reporting and politics of oil business
Considers how the oil business is viewed in different parts of the world
Includes environmental observations and context of why 'fracking' has captured public attention
