While some areas witnessed gentrification, spiralling property prices and a myriad of new places to eat out, other places like Brixton and Tottenham were recovering from riots. Bergström's evocative images and Forshaw's perceptive text capture a changing and uncertain world on the streets of London.

Alec Forshaw has written a number of books on London's history and topography, including Smithfield Past and Present (with Theo Bergstrom), The Markets of London (with Theo Bergstrom), The Open Spaces of London (with Theo Bergstrom), 1970s London and The Building That Lived Twice. He lives in London.
